Miami is a major city located on the Atlantic coast in southeastern Florida. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade county, the most populous county in Florida, and the eighth-most populous county in the United States. The 42nd largest city in the U.S., it is the principal, central, and most populous city of the South Florida metropolitan area, the most populous metropolis in the southeastern United States.

Geography

Miami and its suburbs are located on a broad plain between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east and also extends from Florida Bay north to Lake Okeechobee. The main portion of the city lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay, which contains several hundred natural and artificially created barrier islands, the largest of which contains Miami Beach and South Beach.
